Residential Seawall Rehabilitation

Marblehead Neck, MA

Stephens Associates Consulting Engineers (SA) designed repairs to this 10-ft. high mortared stone masonry seawall that was bulging and in poor condition, included a landward concrete buttress and seaward toe support by epoxy-coated sheet piles.

As part of design SA performed test pits to evaluate wall geometry and backfill and evaluated wall stability by analytical methods. SA assisted with permitting through the local conservation commission, MassDEP wetlands and Chapter 91 licensing, Massachusetts Coastal Zone Management, and the US Army Corps of Engineers.

To meet requirements imposed by MassDEP to reduce beach erosion, and also to improve aesthetics, SA designed a stepped stone masonry wave attenuator at the wall toe to cover the sheet piles and transition to the existing wall.

SA periodically observed construction, consulting with the Contractor, Client and Owner to complete the project.
